Background
Declan started out on the business desk of a regional paper, covering payments companies and the early rush of card processors into online gaming. That beat turned into a specialism when the first wave of offshore casinos began targeting Irish and British players, and for most of the following decade he wrote about the gap between what operators promised and what their cashiers delivered.
He followed the long passage of Irish gambling reform from the 2013 scheme through to the Gambling Regulation Act 2024, and has written extensively on what the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland means in practice for a player choosing where to deposit. His focus has never been the games themselves — it is the licence paperwork, the terms and the withdrawal pipeline, because that is where players actually lose money they should not.
What Declan does on this site
- Licence verification. Every operator's licence number is checked against the issuing regulator's register before a brand is listed.
- Terms review. Bonus and withdrawal terms are read in full, and the five values that decide an offer's real worth are recorded for each brand.
- Review verdicts. He writes the verdict, strengths and weaknesses on every casino review, including the drawbacks operators would prefer left out.
- Ranking sign-off. No position on any table changes without his approval, and never for commercial reasons.
- Corrections. Reader reports of outdated figures go to him first and are checked the same week.
How he tests a casino
The routine is the same for every brand and is published in full on our about page. In short: licence and ownership first, terms second, then a real registration with real documents, a minimum deposit on at least two payment rails, play without a bonus, and a full withdrawal timed from request to funds received — once on a weekday and, where the operator allows it, once at a weekend.
Declan's rule of thumb: "The advertised payout time is marketing. The measured one is the review. When the two disagree, we print the measured one and say so."

Editorial principles
- No review is written from operator press material.
- Every recommendation names at least one real drawback.
- Commission never moves a score or a position.
- Gambling is described as entertainment with a cost, never as a way to earn money.
- Where terms contradict marketing, the terms are quoted.
